Understanding and Using Safe Mode to Troubleshoot Excel Errors

Safe Mode is essentially a special version of Windows that allows you to use your computer without loading the third-party software that might be causing issues.

Modify the Registry

  1. Start Registry Editor by typing regedit in the search bar of Windows.
  2. In the right pane, double-click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
  3. Go to Software and double-click on Microsoft, then double-click on Office.

  4. In the left pane, look for Excel 2016 and in the right pane for the Instance path.
  5. Double-click on it and in the right panel double-click on AppData and change the value to C:ProgramDataMicrosoftOffice.

Disable Add-in services

  1. Press Windows Key + R to open Run.
  2. Type in services.msc and click OK to open Services window.

  3. Look for Excel Add-in Services. Right click it and select Properties.
  4. Uncheck the Startup type and select Disabled.
  5. Restart your computer.
  6. Enable Add-in services

  8. Look for Excel Add-in Services. Right click it and select Properties.
  9. Select Automatic from the Startup type list and click OK.
  10. Restart your computer.

Change your registry settings

  1. Press the Windows key + R, type regedit, and click OK.
